FDC's Sleepover
Essentials
Prepare
your dog for the best time ever at an FDC
sleepover
Did you remember your toothbrush? Your medication? What
about that teddy bear you have slept with since you were
five, (the one no one knows about)?
These are just some of the
basics that you pack when you are traveling, so make
sure you do the same for your faithful friend. Here is a
list that will help prepare your dog (as well as us!)
for their sleepover!
- Definitely check in by 10 a.m. to ensure that your
dog gets to play and socialize ALL DAY -- this
guarantees that all dogs are on the same schedule!
- Ensure we have up-to-date emergency contact
numbers for your veterinarian/family/friends (just in
case we can't reach you).
- Bring your dog's food (preferably, pre-bagged and
measured for each meal).
- Pack all medications and let us know the dosage
directives.
- Make certain that your dog's flea/tick
preventative has been given prior to the sleepover.
Without a doubt,
schedule a trial day prior to your sleepover, so
everyone is certain that your dog is comfortable with
the environment at FDC. Sleepovers are not for all
dogs and if we determine that there might be a better
alternative for your dog, we will help you find a
solution. If all
systems are go, then an expertly packed doggy duffel bag
will help your dog feel more relaxed and happy in your
absence!

Have You
Heard of Bloat?
It's all About
Awareness
A little
known affliction called GDV (Gastric Dilation/Volvulus)
may stand in the way of your dog's longevity and your
family's happiness. Also known as bloat, it is
considered to be the second leading killer of canines.
What is
GDV? Bloat usually
occurs when the stomach twists on its axis or swells
from gas, and unfortunately both can take place in a
single episode. Normally, a dog can relieve the gas
pressure by burping or vomiting, but with GDV, the air
is trapped, the stomach distends, blood flow is cut off,
and the dog is sent into shock. GDV almost always occurs
in deep chested dogs, and though very rare, in some
small breeds as well. What are the
Symptoms?
If you suspect
your dog is falling victim to bloat, call your vet
immediately. Your doctor will surgically
decompress the stomach, treat your dog's shock with
fluids, and make sure there are no abnormalities of the
heart. How quickly treatment is started, the severity of
the distention, and whether any other diseases are
present in your dog all factor into the chances of
survival. Lack of knowledge and awareness is the real
burden when it comes to this fatal misfortune.
Knowing the signs of bloat
will hopefully lead to a long, healthy and happy life
with your dog.
